How do I choose the right yarn if I cannot find the one mentioned?
If your pattern's yarn isn't available, pick a substitute matching the yarn weight, fiber, yardage, needle size, and similar texture to maintain gauge and style.
-
What is gauge, and why is it important?
To make a knitting gauge swatch, start by casting on a number of stitches slightly larger than the recommended gauge. Knit in the stitch pattern specified for your project until the swatch measures at least 4 inches across and tall. Once finished, wash and block the swatch exactly as you will treat your final piece. Then, use a ruler or gauge tool to count how many stitches and rows fit into a 4-inch square.
Creating a gauge swatch is necessary because it ensures that your knitting tension matches the pattern’s specifications. This step prevents your finished project from being too small or too large, which can affect both the fit and the amount of yarn you will need. By confirming accurate gauge beforehand, you can confidently proceed with your project and achieve the desired size and look.

What if my gauge doesn't match the pattern?
If your gauge swatch doesn’t match the pattern gauge, don’t worry—there are a few adjustments you can make. First, try changing your needle size: if your swatch has more stitches per inch than the pattern, switch to a larger needle; if it has fewer, go down a needle size. You might also want to check your tension and make sure you’re knitting consistently. It’s a good idea to knit another swatch with the new needle size to see if your gauge now matches the pattern. Taking these steps helps ensure your finished project will have the correct size and fit.
